Transgender Inclusion in Congregations

Get ready to transform your heart and your approach to “welcome"! LREDA has partnered with the Transforming Hearts Collective to support UU religious educators in the work of transgender inclusion and culture shift.

This January-March 2020, join fellow UU religious educators in taking and discussing the powerful course “Transgender Inclusion in Congregations” together. LREDA has committed scholarship funds so that as many religious educators as possible can access this opportunity. Developed by Rev. Mykal Slack and Zr. Alex Kapitan, this six-session online course supports participants in taking their knowledge and skills to the next level to support the creation of religious education programs and congregations that are fully inclusive and affirming of trans/non-binary people.

Register today for:

  • Full access to the online course (lectures, resources, and discussion board)
  • Placement in a small discussion groups of religious educators to meet virtually once a month for three months
  • Tailored supplemental resources specifically for religious educators
  • Access to several live sessions with Mykal and Alex open only to religious educators taking the course
  • Credit for a 6-hour Learning Experience for credentialing

How much does it cost?

The course costs $125 per person. If 50 LREDA members sign up by December 1, LREDA will unlock a discount of 20% ($100 per person). Generous full and partial scholarships are available; scholarship requests are built into the registration form

How will it work?

Registration closes December 1, at which point registrants will be placed in small groups. The course will run from January through March, with small groups meeting once per month to discuss two sessions each time. Each session consists of a 45- to 60-minute pre-recorded lecture and supplemental resources (get more course details). Participants will watch the lectures on their own whenever they want and then meet up virtually with their small group for discussion.

Who can take the course?

Anyone who is a member of LREDA. People of all genders are welcome to participate; this course is for everyone, of any experience or relationship to trans communities. Trans/non-binary participants will have a choice of trans-only or mixed-gender small group. If you have any questions about whether this course is for you, please contact [email protected].

Why does it matter?

In January 2019, TRUUsT, the organization of UU trans religious professionals, released a report that showed that almost three-quarters of trans/non-binary UUs do not feel as though their congregation is completely inclusive of them as trans people, and almost half report regularly experiencing trans-related marginalization in UU spaces.

Meanwhile, resources for creating affirming religious education programs for children and youth have lagged behind the ever-increasing need. This course will provide essential support to religious educators looking to support trans and gender creative children and youth, as well as help their congregations ensure that these members’ spiritual needs are met as they grow up and enter the adult community.

I’d like to invite my [minister, youth group director, entire congregation] to take this course with me. Is that possible?

This current opportunity is specifically designed for religious educators to engage with this course and get role-specific resources and support, so registration is limited to LREDA members. However, all participants who complete the course will receive a coupon for $50 off a congregational enrollment so that you can bring this course to your congregation at a discount.

My LREDA chapter wants to take the course together as a chapter. Is that possible?
Yes. To participate as a chapter, all chapter members who want to take the course should register individually. One person from the chapter should then send an email to [email protected] with a list of the chapter members who have signed up for the course. After registration closes on December 1 the folks on that list will be placed together in their own chapter-specific small group. Note that if there are more than 6 or 7 people they would be split into two small groups so that they can best benefit from the small group conversations.
